About What Neighbors Paid
What Neighbors Paid is an independently built and operated price database for local services in the United States: roof replacements, water heaters, HVAC, tree work, dental and veterinary procedures, auto repair, moving, and dozens more. It is not owned by, sponsored by, or affiliated with any contractor, provider network, or lead-generation company.
The site is run by a small team of three: C. Githii, Walter Armani, and Caroline M. They share the work of collecting reports, vetting them against the editorial policy, and reviewing what gets published. Pages do not carry individual bylines: guidance is drafted with software assistance, checked against the same rules as everything else, and stands on the data it cites rather than on any one person’s name.
It exists because service prices are opaque in a way that costs people real money. Contractors know what the market pays; customers mostly don’t. The site’s job is to put the numbers neighbors actually paid in front of the next person getting a quote.
Where the prices come from
Every price on the site is one of exactly two kinds:
- Submitted anonymously to What Neighbors Paid. Someone used the price checker to record what they paid or were quoted. We never collect names, accounts, or contact details with a submission.
- Documented from a public source. Someone stated a price they paid, in their own words, in a public place such as a Reddit thread, a Better Business Bureau review or complaint, or a homeowner forum. We store the exact wording and link each such report to the original post, and we never record usernames or identities.
Reports pass through automated extraction (reviewed by sampling), plausibility checks, duplicate filtering, statistical outlier flagging, and a moderation hold for suspicious submissions. Pages publish statistics only once at least eight eligible reports exist. A weekly job re-checks documented sources and removes reports whose original post has been deleted. The full rules live in the editorial policy and how our data works.
What this site is not
Nothing here is a quote, an estimate for your specific job, or professional advice — medical, dental, veterinary, legal, or otherwise. Prices are informational reports of what other people say they paid. We do not endorse, rank, or recommend providers, and a provider’s name appearing in reports is not an endorsement.
