What drives the price of appliance repair
Appliance-repair cost starts with the diagnostic visit, then parts and labor. Access, brand, age, and failure type matter: replacing a dryer belt is simpler than opening a refrigerator's sealed refrigerant system or pulling a built-in oven from cabinetry. Premium and imported brands may require proprietary diagnostics, specialized training, and scarce parts. Gas appliances and refrigerant work require appropriate qualifications.
One shop's number includes the service-call fee, return visit, labor, and part warranty; another's covers only the replacement part. OEM parts cost more than aftermarket equivalents, and flat-rate labor can look different from hourly billing. A diagnosis should identify the failed component and the reason it failed, since a control board can be damaged by another unresolved fault.
Worth asking the shop
Is the diagnostic fee applied to the repair? Is the part OEM or aftermarket? Are the return visit and labor warranty included? Will you call before exceeding the approved repair total?
Red flags
Replacing an expensive control board based only on an error code, collecting full payment before ordering an identifiable part, repeatedly adding parts without retesting, or recommending refrigerant recharge without locating and repairing the leak.
