What drives the price of bathroom remodel
Wet-area construction, layout, and fixture level govern a bathroom budget. Moving a toilet, tub, shower, or vanity changes drain, vent, and supply piping, while enlarging a shower may require structural work. Tile size and pattern affect labor, but waterproofing beneath tile matters more than the visible finish. Curbless showers, heated floors, heavy glass, and wall-hung fixtures require precise preparation.
The largest quote difference is often what sits behind the tile. Demolition, rot repair, shower pan, waterproof membrane, backer board, niche construction, plumbing valves, ventilation, electrical protection, permits, glass, painting, and disposal may be separate. Tile and fixture allowances can hide product differences. Older bathrooms may also reveal lead paint, asbestos-containing material, undersized wiring, or damaged subfloor after demolition.
Worth asking the shop
What waterproofing system and flood test are included? Are plumbing, electrical, ventilation, permits, glass, and painting in the quote? What products do the allowances actually buy? How are rotten framing and subfloor repairs priced?
Red flags
Tiling directly over ordinary drywall in a shower, relying on grout as the waterproof layer, skipping required permits for relocated plumbing, or quoting a curbless shower without addressing floor recess, drainage slope, and waterproof transitions.
