What drives the price of boiler replacement
Heating load, fuel, distribution system, and efficiency goals decide what a boiler swap involves. Steam boilers must be sized to connected radiation, while hot-water boilers should follow a heat-loss calculation. A condensing boiler needs low enough return-water temperatures, compatible venting, and condensate disposal to achieve its efficiency. Converting fuel, changing chimney use, or correcting old near-boiler piping can make installation much larger than a basic swap.
Everything around the boiler is where estimates diverge. Pumps, zone valves, expansion tank, air separator, controls, indirect water heater, gas line, oil tank work, chimney liner, sidewall venting, water treatment, permits, and asbestos handling may be separate. A low equipment price may reuse failing circulators or incorrect steam piping. Rebates may require specific equipment and installation documentation.
Worth asking the shop
What heat-loss or connected-radiation calculation supports this size? Which pumps, controls, venting, and near-boiler piping are included? Is condensate neutralization required? Who handles permits, chimney work, asbestos, startup testing, and rebate paperwork?
Red flags
Matching the old boiler's input without sizing, promising condensing efficiency on an unsuitable high-temperature system, venting new equipment into an unverified chimney, or omitting required steam header and return-piping details.
