What drives the price of braces
Braces are quoted as a whole course of treatment, and bite complexity plus expected duration set the fee. Rotations, severe crowding, impacted teeth, jaw discrepancies, and extraction cases require more planning and adjustment than mild alignment. Ceramic brackets cost more than metal and may be limited to visible teeth. Expanders, temporary anchorage devices, surgical exposure, or jaw surgery are separate sources of complexity.
What happens after bonding is where treatment fees quietly diverge. Diagnostic records, X-rays, adjustment visits, repairs, replacement brackets, treatment extensions, debonding, and retainers all need a home on the contract, together or itemized. Orthodontic insurance commonly has a lifetime benefit rather than an annual allowance, and adult coverage may differ from dependent coverage. A quoted payment plan does not reveal the full treatment fee.
Worth asking the shop
What bite problems does the plan correct? Are records, every adjustment, repairs, debonding, and retainers included? Could appliances, extractions, or surgery be added later? What happens if treatment exceeds the estimated time?
Red flags
Promising an exact finish date before complete records, pricing only the monthly payment, excluding retainers from a supposedly comprehensive fee, or offering cosmetic front-tooth alignment while ignoring a documented bite problem.
