Brake pads are priced per axle. Front and rear are separate jobs, and many quotes quietly cover only one. Pad material moves the price (ceramic pads cost more than semi-metallic but last longer and dust less), and heavier vehicles like trucks, SUVs, and EVs wear pads faster and often take pricier parts.

The bigger swing is whether rotors ride along. If your rotors are worn or warped, shops will quote pads and rotors as a bundle, which can double the job. That's often legitimate, since thin rotors can't always be resurfaced, but it's the first thing to check when two quotes look wildly different.
