What drives the price of cat spay / neuter
Cat sterilization is priced differently for females and males. A female spay is abdominal surgery, while a routine male neuter is shorter and usually needs no skin sutures. Pregnancy, heat, obesity, age, and prior surgery increase a spay's difficulty. A male with retained testicles may need inguinal or abdominal exploration rather than a routine scrotal procedure.
Perioperative care is the thing to compare line by line. The exam, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, IV catheter, fluids, airway management, monitoring, pain medication, cone, microchip, vaccines, and recheck may be included or separate. Low-cost community or shelter programs use a high-volume model and may have eligibility limits or fewer optional services, so their package is not identical to a private hospital's procedure.
Worth asking the shop
Are the exam, anesthesia monitoring, pain medication, and follow-up included? Is there an extra charge for pregnancy, heat, or retained testicles? Will my cat receive an IV catheter? Are vaccines or microchipping optional additions?
Red flags
Treating postoperative pain control as optional, quoting a routine male neuter despite a retained testicle, adding vaccines without reviewing records and current health, or sending home a cat that has not recovered adequately from anesthesia without clear monitoring instructions.
