What drives the price of catalytic converter replacement
Catalytic converter prices split dramatically between OEM and aftermarket units. In California and other CARB states, only CARB-compliant converters are legal, which can triple the part price versus a federal-spec unit. Vehicles with multiple cats or integrated manifold designs cost more; oxygen sensors are often replaced alongside.
If yours was stolen, check insurance first: comprehensive coverage typically pays for replacement, and shops see theft claims constantly. A converter that failed on its own often failed because of something upstream (misfire, oil burning) that needs diagnosing, or the new one clogs too.
