What drives the price of dental crown
A dental crown covers a weakened tooth; what you pay tracks the preparation the tooth needs and the material going onto it. Zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, lithium disilicate, and high-gold crowns have different laboratory requirements. A broken tooth may need a core buildup, and a root-canal-treated tooth with little structure may need a post. Crown-lengthening surgery adds another procedure when sound tooth structure is buried below the gumline.
Before comparing offices, confirm the price covers the whole crown sequence. Traditional crowns involve preparation, an impression or scan, a temporary, laboratory fabrication, and final cementation. Same-day crowns avoid an outside lab but require in-office scanning and milling. Insurance may apply a material downgrade or replacement-frequency rule, so an estimate of benefits is not the dentist's fee.
Worth asking the shop
Which crown material is planned, and why? Are the core buildup, post, temporary, and final cementation included? Is any crown lengthening expected? What are the laboratory and workmanship warranties?
Red flags
Recommending a crown for a tooth that could be restored conservatively without showing the fracture or lost structure, billing a core buildup when no separate buildup was placed, or grinding the tooth before confirming insurance authorization and the complete treatment plan.
