What drives the price of dental filling
Dentists bill fillings by tooth, material, and the number of surfaces restored. A one-surface cavity on a front tooth is smaller than decay spanning several molar surfaces. Composite requires moisture control and layered curing, while amalgam is less cosmetic but remains durable in appropriate cases. Deep decay near the pulp may require a liner, temporary restoration, or different treatment.
Much of the estimate rides on what the dentist expects to find after removing decay or an old filling. X-rays, local anesthetic, pulp protection, replacement of a failed restoration, and bite adjustment may be included or separate. Dental plans may pay based on the cheaper material and leave the patient responsible for a composite upgrade, especially on back teeth.
Worth asking the shop
How many surfaces are being filled? Is the material composite or amalgam? Can you show the cavity on the X-ray or intraoral image? What happens if the decay reaches the nerve?
Red flags
Replacing sound amalgam solely because it contains mercury, diagnosing several fillings without showing the affected teeth, quoting a one-surface restoration when the chart already shows multiple surfaces, or promising that a very deep filling cannot later need root-canal treatment.
