What drives the price of driveway paving
A paving bid covers area, material, and everything below the finished surface. Asphalt needs a stable, compacted aggregate base and proper lift thickness. Concrete needs prepared subgrade, specified slab thickness, control joints, finishing, and curing. Weak soil, poor drainage, heavy vehicles, steep grades, demolition, and hauling can make base work more expensive than the visible pavement.
Overlay versus full replacement is the fork in the road. An asphalt overlay leaves the existing driveway in place and cannot correct widespread base failure. Full-depth work removes failed material, repairs soft spots, grades drainage, compacts the base, and places pavement. Concrete proposals may differ on reinforcement, thickness at the street or garage, joint layout, curing method, and sealing. Permit or apron requirements may involve the municipality.
Worth asking the shop
Is this an overlay or full removal? What compacted base and finished pavement thickness are specified? How will drainage and soft subgrade be corrected? Are demolition, hauling, permits, joints, reinforcement, and curing included?
Red flags
Door-to-door crews claiming to have "leftover asphalt," quoting thickness before compaction, paving over moving cracks or soft base, or applying black sealer and describing it as a structural asphalt overlay.
