What drives the price of electrical panel upgrade
Electrical-panel work ranges from replacing a panel at the same amperage to upgrading the service from 100 to 200 amps. A service upgrade may require larger entrance conductors, a meter socket, mast or underground conduit, grounding and bonding, and utility coordination. Panel location, damaged feeders, crowded circuits, and trenching can make the work much larger than changing the breaker box.
Code-related work is handled differently from one electrician to the next. Permits, utility disconnect and reconnect, circuit labeling, grounding electrodes, surge protection, and required AFCI or GFCI protection may be included or listed as allowances. Moving the panel or separating improperly combined neutrals and grounds adds labor. Repairing drywall, siding, stucco, or landscaping is often excluded.
Worth asking the shop
Is this a panel replacement or a full service upgrade? Does a load calculation support the new amperage? Are permits, utility fees, grounding, surge protection, and required breaker changes included? Who repairs wall or exterior finishes?
Red flags
Offering an unpermitted panel swap, reusing breakers not listed for the new panel, claiming every branch circuit needs replacement without identifying defects or code triggers, or scheduling work without confirming the utility's meter and service requirements.
