What drives the price of heartworm treatment
Disease severity and the full adulticide protocol determine the course of heartworm treatment. A positive antigen result should be confirmed, then the dog's condition may be staged with examination, bloodwork, chest X-rays, and other testing. Standard treatment includes preventive medication, doxycycline, three melarsomine injections, pain control, and strict exercise restriction. Dogs with heart or lung compromise may need stabilization or hospitalization before adulticide injections.
Because treatment spans months, estimates split over what's counted. Confirmation tests, microfilaria testing, preventive doses, doxycycline, steroids, injection visits, hospitalization, pain medication, emergency care, and later retesting may be itemized. "Slow kill" using preventive medication alone is not equivalent to the recommended melarsomine protocol and leaves adult worms causing damage longer.
Worth asking the shop
Was the positive result confirmed with a different test? Does the estimate include all three melarsomine injections and pretreatment medications? Which imaging, hospitalization, and retesting are included? How long must exercise remain restricted?
Red flags
Starting adulticide from one unconfirmed screening result, quoting only the injections while omitting pretreatment and monitoring, presenting slow kill as equal to melarsomine, or failing to emphasize strict activity restriction before and after the worms die.
