What drives the price of house rewiring
Circuit count, home size, wiring condition, and access determine the shape of a rewire. Open framing allows faster cable runs than plaster walls, masonry, crawlspaces, or packed attics. Knob-and-tube, deteriorated cloth cable, ungrounded circuits, and problematic aluminum branch wiring require different remedies. A larger service or panel may be needed when new circuits add load, but it is not automatically part of rewiring.
Finish repair and code scope are where electricians' numbers drift. Permits, utility work, panel changes, grounding, smoke alarms, AFCI and GFCI protection, receptacle count, fixtures, wall openings, patching, painting, and temporary power may be included differently. Some proposals replace every cable; others retain safe circuits and address documented defects. An occupied home also requires sequencing and daily restoration of essential power.
Worth asking the shop
Which circuits and wiring types will be replaced? Is the panel or service included? Where will walls be opened, and who patches and paints them? Are permits, inspections, grounding, AFCI, GFCI, and smoke-alarm work included?
Red flags
Declaring every old wire unsafe without testing, offering unpermitted rewiring, burying junction boxes behind finished walls, or quoting electrical work while leaving patching and required code upgrades completely undefined.
