What drives the price of interior painting
Painters price interior work by paintable area and scope, not floor area alone. Walls, ceilings, baseboards, doors, cabinets, and window trim are separate surfaces with different preparation and application speeds. High ceilings, stairwells, occupied rooms, dark-to-light color changes, and damaged drywall increase labor. Trim enamel and cabinet coatings also require more sanding, masking, and curing than ordinary wall paint.
Preparation and coat count are where painters' bids part ways. One bid may include only spot patching and one finish coat, while another includes crack repair, sanding, stain-blocking primer, caulking, two coats, furniture moving, and daily cleanup. Paint brand, product line, sheen, and who buys the paint should be written down. Disturbing paint in many pre-1978 homes also triggers lead-safe work requirements.
Worth asking the shop
Which surfaces and rooms are included? How much patching, sanding, priming, and caulking is covered? How many coats follow the stated paint color and product? Who moves furniture and protects floors?
Red flags
A whole-house quote based only on bedroom count, calling one primer-and-paint application two coats, painting over stains without blocking them, or dry-sanding old paint in a pre-1978 home without addressing EPA lead-safe practices.
