What drives the price of junk removal
Junk removal is priced by occupied truck volume, with added charges for weight, labor, and regulated items. A curbside couch is different from dense roofing debris in a basement. Stairs, long carries, dismantling, bagging loose material, and loading add crew time. Concrete, soil, shingles, tires, mattresses, electronics, and refrigerant appliances may face special disposal rules or facility fees.
Two quotes can differ because truck sizes and included volume are not standardized. Ask for the truck's dimensions or cubic capacity, the minimum load, and how partial loads are measured. Landfill, transfer-station, recycling, fuel, and sweep-up charges may be bundled. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners require proper refrigerant recovery before final disposal, while paint, chemicals, asbestos, and medical waste are often refused.
Worth asking the shop
How is volume measured, and what size is the truck? Which weight or item surcharges apply? Are labor, disposal, and sweep-up included? Where will appliances, electronics, and recyclable material go?
Red flags
A low phone estimate that rises after loading, calling different truck sizes a "full load," accepting hazardous material with no disposal plan, or removing refrigerant appliances for cash while refusing to identify the licensed disposal facility.
