What drives the price of long-distance move
Weight, distance, and added services are what an interstate mover is actually charging you for. Packing, crating, storage, stairs, elevators, long carries, and a shuttle truck add to line-haul transportation. Trucks and crews are tighter during peak periods. A dedicated truck and guaranteed delivery window differ from a shipment consolidated with other households.
One distinction outweighs everything else: binding versus non-binding. A binding estimate covers the listed inventory and services, while a non-binding estimate can be adjusted using shipment weight and the mover's tariff. Full-value protection costs more than released-value liability. Confirm whether the company is the registered carrier or a broker assigning the job to another carrier.
Worth asking the shop
Is the estimate binding or non-binding? Was it based on a physical or virtual survey and complete inventory? Which packing, shuttle, storage, and access charges are included? What valuation option and delivery window are written into the bill of lading?
Red flags
A large upfront deposit, a quote based only on cubic feet or a short phone list, an undisclosed broker, blank documents, changing the estimate after loading, or withholding delivery for charges not supported by the signed estimate and bill of lading.
