What drives the price of night guard
Material, design, and adjustment determine what a custom night guard costs. Soft guards, hard acrylic splints, and dual-laminate appliances behave differently. A retainer-like guard may protect teeth, while an adjusted stabilization splint manages how upper and lower teeth contact. Severe grinding, missing teeth, implants, jaw-joint symptoms, and an unstable bite require more design and follow-up than a basic appliance.
Records and follow-up adjustments are worth confirming up front. Exam, scan or impression, bite registration, laboratory fabrication, delivery adjustment, follow-up visits, repairs, and replacement warranty may be bundled or separate. Dental insurance may cover a guard only for documented bruxism and may impose replacement limits. An over-the-counter guard is not equivalent to a laboratory appliance fitted to the bite.
Worth asking the shop
Is this soft, hard acrylic, or dual-laminate? Is it a protective guard or an adjusted stabilization splint? How many fitting visits are included? What happens if it cracks, warps, or changes my bite?
Red flags
Making a guard without examining teeth and jaw joints, delivering it without checking contacts, claiming it permanently cures grinding, or selling a soft guard to a heavy grinder without discussing chewing, wear, and replacement risk.
