What drives the price of pet tooth extraction
Tooth type, root anatomy, and disease burden set the price of a veterinary extraction. A mobile single-rooted incisor is easier than a healthy-looking canine or multi-rooted carnassial tooth requiring a gum flap, bone removal, root sectioning, and sutures. Cats with tooth resorption and pets with fractured roots or severe periodontal loss need different techniques. Every extraction occurs under general anesthesia with airway protection.
The dental procedure wrapped around the surgery is most of the bill. Pre-anesthetic testing, IV catheter, fluids, monitoring, full-mouth dental X-rays, nerve blocks, cleaning, extraction time, medications, and recheck may be bundled differently. Dental X-rays before and after extraction confirm root anatomy and complete removal. A pre-anesthesia estimate may include a range because hidden disease appears only after probing and imaging.
Worth asking the shop
Which teeth are expected to be removed, and why? Are full-mouth and post-extraction X-rays included? How are surgical extractions billed? Are nerve blocks, pain medication, monitoring, and follow-up included?
Red flags
Extracting without dental X-rays, charging per tooth without distinguishing simple and surgical work, allowing a non-veterinarian to perform extractions, or obtaining blanket consent with no spending limit or contact plan for unexpected teeth.
