What drives the price of pet vaccinations
Vaccines are billed per product and per dose, not as one annual package. Puppies and kittens need an initial series because maternal antibodies can interfere with early doses. Adult boosters follow labels, prior records, rabies law, and exposure risk. Core vaccines differ between dogs and cats, while Bordetella, Lyme, influenza, and adult feline leukemia vaccination depend on lifestyle.
Visit structure explains most of the difference between clinics. An examination fee, rabies certificate, combination vaccine, individual vaccines, fecal test, heartworm test, feline leukemia test, and parasite preventives combine differently at every practice. A combination injection protects against several diseases but is one product. Missing records change the schedule, and boarding facilities may require vaccines beyond the pet's normal plan.
Worth asking the shop
Which vaccines are due according to the records? Which are core, legally required, or lifestyle-based? Does this visit require an exam fee? How many additional doses will complete the series?
Red flags
Selling the same vaccine package to every pet without reviewing age and exposure, calling optional vaccines legally mandatory, charging for separate components already contained in a combination vaccine, or administering vaccines to an actively ill pet without a veterinarian's assessment.
