What drives the price of root canal
Which tooth needs the root canal matters more than anything else, because canal anatomy decides the work. Front teeth commonly have fewer canals, while premolars and molars can have several narrow, curved, or hidden canals requiring more time and imaging. Calcified canals, an existing crown or post, prior treatment, and infection increase complexity. Endodontists may charge more because they handle difficult anatomy using specialized microscopes and instruments.
The misunderstanding that costs people the most: root-canal treatment usually does not include the final restoration. The endodontic fee may cover diagnosis, local anesthetic, rubber-dam isolation, cleaning, filling the canals, and a temporary filling. A permanent filling, core buildup, post, or crown is commonly billed afterward by the restorative dentist. Retreatment and apicoectomy are separate procedures, not routine parts of a first root canal.
Worth asking the shop
Is this initial treatment or retreatment? How many canals are expected? Does the fee include all treatment visits and the temporary filling? What permanent restoration will be needed afterward?
Red flags
Quoting from symptoms alone without testing and imaging, performing treatment without rubber-dam isolation, presenting the root-canal fee as the complete tooth-restoration cost, or starting a crown before confirming that a cracked tooth is restorable.
