What drives the price of sump pump installation
The first question is whether you're replacing a pump or creating a drainage system from scratch. A replacement uses the basin and discharge route. A first installation may require breaking concrete, excavating a pit, installing a sealed basin, connecting drain tile, routing discharge outdoors, and adding a dedicated receptacle. Pump capacity must match vertical lift and pipe resistance, not horsepower alone.
Backup protection and discharge work account for most of the spread. Check valve, alarm, airtight lid, battery backup, secondary pump, charger, outlet, exterior piping, freeze protection, permits, and concrete patching may be separate. A pump cannot fix groundwater that never reaches the basin, and discharging beside the foundation can send water back toward it.
Worth asking the shop
Is this pump replacement or a new basin and drainage installation? What flow will the pump deliver at the actual head height? Are check valve, alarm, sealed lid, electrical work, and exterior discharge included? What powers the backup during an outage?
Red flags
Selecting by horsepower alone, connecting to an extension cord, discharging into prohibited plumbing or beside the foundation, or selling a battery backup without stating battery type, expected runtime, alarm, and maintenance needs.
