What drives the price of teeth whitening
Delivery method and starting tooth condition determine whitening results and price alike. In-office bleaching uses higher-concentration peroxide with gum isolation, while dentist-supervised take-home treatment uses custom trays over several days. Intrinsic discoloration, tetracycline staining, fluorosis, and a dark nonvital tooth respond differently from ordinary food or tobacco staining. Whitening changes natural tooth color but not crowns, veneers, bridges, or tooth-colored fillings.
Session count and take-home support are what separate offers. Exam, cleaning, photographs, sensitivity treatment, custom trays, refill gel, touch-up visits, and desensitizing products may be included or separate. A light may accompany in-office whitening, but the peroxide and contact protocol do the bleaching. Existing restorations may need replacement afterward if they no longer match.
Worth asking the shop
Is this in-office bleaching, custom trays, or both? How many sessions and gel refills are included? Which teeth or restorations will not change color? What is the plan if sensitivity develops?
Red flags
Whitening before checking for cavities, cracks, or gum disease, guaranteeing a specific shade, claiming the light permanently whitens teeth without peroxide, or failing to explain that visible crowns and fillings may need replacement for a color match.
