What drives the price of timing belt replacement
Timing belt pricing is nearly all labor. The belt itself is cheap, but reaching it isn't. The standard practice is to replace the water pump, tensioners, and idler pulleys at the same time since they live in the same place; a quote without them often means a second labor bill later.
If your engine is an "interference" design (most are), a snapped belt bends valves and turns a maintenance item into an engine rebuild, which is why shops treat overdue belts with urgency. Chain-driven engines generally don't need this service at all, so if you're quoted a timing chain replacement, that's a different (and usually diagnostic-driven) conversation.
Worth asking the shop
Is this a full kit with water pump and tensioners? Is my engine an interference design? What's the mileage interval in the manual?
