What drives the price of transmission replacement

This is one of the widest price ranges in auto repair, and the biggest variable is what "replacement" means. A used transmission from a salvage yard is cheapest but riskiest; a rebuild of your unit sits in the middle; a remanufactured unit with a nationwide warranty costs the most up front and is usually the safest. Labor is heavy either way, and all-wheel-drive and some transverse layouts add hours.

Warranty length is the real differentiator between quotes. Twelve months on a local rebuild and three years on a reman are not the same product, even at the same price. The torque converter, fluid, and cooler-line flush should be included; a failed transmission usually contaminates all three.

Worth asking the shop

Used, rebuilt, or remanufactured? What's the warranty in months and miles? Is the torque converter included? Is the diagnostic fee credited toward the repair?
