What drives the price of vet exam / wellness visit
A routine veterinary exam fee pays for the veterinarian's assessment and consultation, not every service during the visit. The exam typically covers weight, body condition, heart, lungs, eyes, ears, mouth, skin, joints, and abdominal palpation. A sick-pet exam may require a different appointment type. Senior pets and animals with chronic disease often need screening beyond the examination.
One clinic's number is only the office-call fee; another's bundles vaccines or tests. Bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal testing, heartworm screening, feline leukemia testing, nail trims, parasite preventives, and vaccines are separate. A wellness plan may spread services across monthly payments, but it is not pet insurance and may cover only care at that practice.
Worth asking the shop
Is this fee for the exam only? Which vaccines or screening tests are due today, and why? Are laboratory samples processed in-house or sent out? Does a wellness package renew automatically?
Red flags
Advertising a free exam that requires a vaccine bundle, adding screening panels without explaining what each evaluates, treating a brief technician vaccine visit as a full veterinarian exam, or presenting a wellness plan as insurance against accidents and illness.
