What drives the price of Water Heater Replacement

Water-heater replacement starts with tank capacity or, for tankless units, required flow rate and temperature rise. Fuel type matters because gas, electric resistance, heat-pump, and tankless heaters need different venting, wiring, gas supply, clearances, and drainage. Moving the heater, changing its type, or installing it in an attic can turn a straightforward swap into plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.

A surprisingly large share of the bill can be code upgrades. A replacement may require a thermal expansion tank, drain pan and drain line, seismic strapping in some states, new shutoff valves, vent changes, a gas sediment trap, or a dedicated electrical circuit. Tankless conversions may also require a larger gas line, new exhaust routing, condensate handling, and annual flushing provisions.
