Heating capacity, fuel type, AFUE rating, and blower design decide what a new furnace costs. A single-stage gas furnace is simpler than a two-stage or modulating unit with a variable-speed blower. Converting from electric to gas, changing fuel type, resizing the gas line, or fitting equipment into a crawlspace or attic adds work. The furnace must also match the home's heating load and, when central air shares the cabinet, the existing coil and airflow requirements.
Two quotes often diverge because venting is treated differently. A standard-efficiency gas furnace may use a metal flue, while a condensing furnace needs compatible intake and exhaust piping plus a condensate drain. Chimney liners, return-air modifications, filter cabinets, thermostats, permits, and removal of the old unit may be included in one proposal and omitted from another.
